Miranda Row is committed to raising her daughter, running her company, and avoiding men. Yet, no matter where she looks, her past continues to haunt her.
Dr. Zach Shannon is inescapable, exasperating, and compelling. He sparks hope for the future with love and a family. He pushes her to work through the pain and see herself as whole. However, when her past becomes a present threat, will she have the strength to love, or will someone die?
I was given this book by the Author, Lana Mowdy, in exchange for an honest review.
Let me start by saying right off the bat, this is a series and there is a cliffhanger. I did not know this so the ending really had me upset. Now knowing that there is a book 2 makes it a bit better.
The story is well written for the most part. I did have a bit of an issue with the whole thing taking place in what seemed like only a 2 week to a months time span.
It is a romance with a dark twist just like the title suggests. Miranda is a mentally and physically abused, divorced, single mother/business owner. She is trying to run from her past by locking her heart away and swearing off all men. She focuses on her business, daughter and trying to change the image she has of herself.
When she reached her apartment, she flopped on the couch with Elizabeth in her lap. She chose to ignore the pain in her ankle and focus on the beautiful face of her daughter. Golden curls fell around her pale face. Bright blue eyes and a small pointed nose gave her the image of a cherub. She looks just like her father.
Suddenly, his face flashed in her mind. Gorgeous blue eyes just inches from her own became steely as the hands around her throat began to squeeze. “You will never get away from me. No one will ever want you again. You are used, scarred, fat, and useless.” He released her without further threat and left her apartment. She immediately fled her apartment and ran to her friend’s embrace. After calming her down, Carolyn escorted her to the police station where she pressed charges and filed a restraining order. Shivers ran down her back as she remembered the fear that clenched her gut.
Doubt continued to flood her mind. Would the charges and restraining order keep him away? Somehow she remained unconvinced.
That is until she meet Zach Shannon, a good looking man who is taken with her from the moment they meet. He refuses to give up even when she pushes him away. He is determined to win her heart.
When things start to get weird Miranda thinks at first that she is just being paranoid, until there is a confrontation. Can she keep it together long enough for help to arrive or will she die trying?
