“Enslaved” The Life of Anna, Book 1 by Marissa Honeycutt

photo 22471343_zps9682e530.jpgAnna has been turned over to Devin Andersen, the most powerful man in San Francisco.

What does he have planned for her?

Is she just his mistress?

Or does he have darker designs in mind?

Anna’s story begins September 6.

Anna’s entire life was scripted out before she was born by Devin Andersen, a man who doesn’t have her best interests in mind. She is destined to be a tool in his hands to gain ultimate power in the USA. No, not as the President, but as the man who controls the President.

Raised by an extremely abusive guardian, Anna was molded into the perfect tool for Devin’s use. Devin will use Anna’s unique gifts to control everyone around him and eventually take her gifts for himself.
When Devin took her for himself at the age of sixteen, she had a vision of a man. A man who Devin was very interested in. But why? Why would Devin care about a young girl’s dreams?

I received a copy of this book from the author, Marissa Honeycutt, in exchange for an honest review.

*Note: This book came with one hell of a warning and it does NOT over exaggerate!  Read the warning and take it literal.

This series is for grown-ups. This series is not for people who are easily offended, get nightmares easily, or have difficulty reading books about tough subjects. I do not glorify bad things, but bad things do happen to my poor characters. This is not your typical love story. My heroine does not fall in love and live happily ever after…at least not like the typical heroine. There is a happily ever after, but it is a long, painful journey to that end.
This series will likely offend you. This series might make you cry; it might make you throw up. It is a dark story. As my friend, Heidi, said, “It’s dark. It gets darker. It gets even darker, and then it gets even more darker. And then, just when you think it can’t get any darker, it does.”
You’ve been warned.
But, don’t worry. I take you to the deep end gradually. 😉
There are many sexual situations in this series. People die. People get hurt. Things aren’t always truly the way they appear to be. The antagonist isn’t just a bad guy; he’s EVIL. My hero is not perfect. He doesn’t always make the best choices, but his intentions are good. My heroine is human…-ish. 😉 Her worldview is skewed. Things that may appall you are perfectly normal to her. You’ll see why within a few chapters of Book One.
All sexual acts portrayed in this book are between persons of legal age (aka 18 years old). All sexual acts portrayed in this series are between non-related persons. Any violence is non-gratuitous and crucial to the plot and character development.
Do not read this if you are under the age of consent in your country. Do not get angry if the subject or actual book upsets you. If you’re reading this, you’ve been warned.

***This warning applies to the entire series. This first book is not as dark as the rest of the books.***

That being said…don’t read this book if you can’t handle the above.  It’s a disservice to you, the author and the book. I also want to add there is an implication of under age sexual relations…at least by my calculations as I read the book. (It was implied she had sex with Devin, the same day he sent her to the sex training with Jack.  She “trained” for 4 yrs and it was on her 20th Birthday, she was handed over to Devin as his “Mistress”.) This is a crucial part of Anna’s story, but as stated above, you’ve been warned.

The Review

I asked to review this book specifically for it’s dark nature.  I wanted something that was out of my comfort zone.  Something that would bring about emotions that have been dormant.  I wanted to be angry.  I wanted to be shocked.  I wanted to delve into the forbidden and dark side.  I did that….and more.  And now… I crave more of this series.

The thing I loved most about this story is the emotions that are pulled out of me as I read along.  I can understand Anna’s confusion, because I too am confused by Devin’s actions.  Then when Alex comes into the picture, he confuses the hell out of me too! Even though I KNOW Devin is a hateful bastard, I kept wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt, DESPITE all the horrid things he does to Anna!  Especially when he’s loving towards Anna and Alex is a jerk.

What also makes me accept the concept of Anna’s obedience is the fact Devin and Jack were so kind to her.  She even lived with Jack, who was appointed her Guardian after her parents died when Anna was 11 yrs old. For 5 years and prior, they were Uncle Devin and Uncle Jack. They treated her with such kindness. They kept her safe and happy after her world fell apart. So it was instilled in her to always please them, because they loved her.  When she was abused and turned into a sex slave, it was hell, but the whole time she blamed herself for what was happening.  She must’ve done something horrible for them to do this! For her to DESERVE this! Right??

Towards the end of the book, we discover Devin’s and Alex’s intentions for her.  Who will she trust? Who CAN she trust? And with the two masters, how will she be able to please them both? Will she survive them and their future plans for her?

My Final Thoughts:  If you want to take a trip….a trip that is the darkest I’ve ever read, that will mess with your mind, rip out your heart, give you hope and then takes it away, then read this book.  If you are open to sex that is gentle and sex that rips her apart and numerous lovers, with and without consent. Experiences that will make you ask yourself, what the fuck is wrong with these characters? Yet you can’t stop reading! My biggest critique is ALL the sex.  But I also accept this is a crucial part of her story and life. We aren’t allowed to escape it, because Anna isn’t….and I for one, can’t help but want to see how this turns out.
