Alex wants her to be free.
Devin demands her obedience.
As Anna takes her first steps into the world, into love, into friendship, she wonders if she will ever understand either of them.
There is a subculture within our own world that you’ve only heard whispers of. The conspiracy theorists wish they knew Anna’s story. What the conspiracy theorists think they know is only put out there to keep them from the real story.
I received a copy of this book from the author, Marissa Honeycutt, in exchange for an honest review.
*Note: This is the second book to the “Life of Anna” series. It is NOT a standalone book and must be read in order(after Book 1, “Enslaved”(Read Review HERE) This book, as with the first, comes with one hell of a warning and it does NOT over exaggerate! Read the warning on the “Enslaved” Review post and take it literal.
That being said…don’t read this book if you can’t handle the content cited by the warning. It’s a disservice to you, the author and the book. I also want to note there is one comment/sentence made by Devin that pertains to under age sexual conduct. It’s a shock to read, however it is pertinent to painting the picture of how despicable Devin truly is and the lengths he has gone to claim Anna as his own.
****NOTE**** BOOK 1 SPOILERS AHEAD!!! TO LEAD UP TO MY OPINION, I MUST BEGIN WHERE BOOK 1 ENDED!
We left off with Anna having 2 masters, Alex and Devin, after Alex botched Devin’s attempt to take control of Anna’s mind and her powers as an Elder Mistress. As equals, Devin must concede to some of Alex’s wishes, one of which is allowing Anna to live outside of the manor and to have a life as close to normal as a slave is able to have. She has two masters to please. Devin only wants to own and possess her mind, body, powers and soul. Alex just wants her trust, love, heart and devotion. But despite the cruel things Devin does to her, she still feels safer in his presence. She knows what is expected of her. Submission and servitude are familiar and “safe”. Love is a foreign concept to her that comes with pain and disappointment. With Devin’s power outweighing Alex’s, he has more influence over her, instilling a sense of fear towards Alex, even though she knows it is illogical, Devin makes it make sense somehow.
This story is a complete mind screw and I’m putting this delicately. It’s haunting and appalling what she is forced to do for Devin and the price she pays for disobedience is torturous! All in the name of “love”.
But she has been trained to give up her control, trained to accept sexual and physical abuse as normal. As long as it pleases Devin, she’s safe and he’s happy, which makes her happy. You follow along as Anna tries to have “real relationships” with “normal” men. But in the end, it always comes down to sex and her allowance of them using her.
Marissa Honeycutt weaves a web that ensnares us in the chaos and craziness that is Anna’s normal. She makes us feel Anna’s confusion and desperation. Devin can seem so loving one minute, then allowing men to rape Anna so horribly she has blood dripping from her Vagina and Anus the next.
He is a sadistic bastard to say the least. Just when you know Anna is onto him, he uses some evil beings of her kind, to bring him into more power and he gains even more control over her.
Meanwhile, Alex is sinking. He wants nothing more than to save her, but to do so he must sacrifice her for the time being. He shows her true love and devotion, then snatches it away and breaks her fragile heart. Just when I think he’s going to save her, he too is put into a trance by Devin and used as a tool to destroy any spark of hope she has. Causing her to run straight into Devin’s arms.
One of those moments had me yelling at my kindle at him. Asking him WTF he was doing at the manor in the first place!!?? Seriously? You trust your mortal enemy to allow you to get your rocks off with one of his sex slaves, then to just walk away with a smile on your face? You IDIOT! I was so pissed at him for that! I couldn’t blame her for running back to Devin’s arms! Even I felt safer with him, because I by this point, knew what he was capable of, while Alex kept failing and disappointing me.
See the web weaving I mentioned? To say I’m emotionally involved in this story and ensnared in the same trappings, boggles me and yet pleases me. I’ve been looking for a book to attack me in such manner!
I find myself cringing, yelling NO LEAVE HIM ALONE! WAIT FOR ALEX!! and telling her to take a leap of faith and fall in love with this one or that, because Alex sure as hell isn’t hurrying his ass up!! Ugh! I honestly believe Anna’s Story will be the closest to having Stockholm’s Syndrome I will ever have(Lord I pray so at least. I’m barely hanging onto the sanity I have left.)
Once again, Marissa Honeycutt has came through with another Amazing installment to this incomparable Series!! I want MORE MORE MORE!!!!
