“Dirk: A Stepbrother Romance” by Leela Ash

I felt so out of place going to my mother’s fancy wedding on a private island. I could never dream of living a lifestyle full of so much luxury. It was all a bit overwhelming, and then I found someone I thought I could relate to. With his tattoos and muscular body, I never would have pegged him as any type of billionaire, but with the way he demanded respect from everybody in the room, I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised to find out that’s exactly what he was. He was everything I had ever been attracted to in a man… but then I realized that he is also a total arrogant prick.

Still, for some reason I couldn’t get him out of my head. By the time I realized that he would be my new stepbrother, it was too late. I was hooked on him. I couldn’t wait to get off that island as fast as I could, but it turns out I lost my passport and couldn’t get back into the country without it. So I’m stuck here with this complete jerk, and he’s infected my thoughts like a rich, sexy, parasite. I don’t know what to do.

My father’s new marriage is a joke, but the one thing I’m not laughing about is my sexy new stepsister. Her curves bring out the beast in me and I have to do my best to behave. Not only is she my stepsister, but she seems a little uptight. It’s probably nothing a good time wouldn’t fix, but I have my hands full already with my work.

I’m a self-made billionaire, and I intend to keep it that way. However, a group of Russians are determined to hack into my empire and bleed me dry. I can’t let that happen, and unless I can find a way to keep my new stepsister out of my hair so I can focus on the important things, we’re all going to be in trouble. I want her so bad I can hardly think straight, but I have to or there will be hell to pay.

I bought this book off Amazon. Leela Ash is a new to me author and I’ll be reading more from her.  It was a wonderful and quick read and as promised by the author, it’s not a cliff hanger.  This book also has an 18+ readers only warning, which in my opinion isn’t needed really, but I understand the author wants to err on the side of caution.

Dirk is a total Alpha male and sexy as hell but he comes off as a real ass in the beginning. I get that he’s trying to prevent his company from being destroyed, but at times he was cruel to Katherine for no reason. However, he more than makes up for it later.

I was also pleasantly surprised to have a heroine who wasn’t weak. Even when Katherine is in a “damsel in distress” situation, she still kicks ass!  I hate her mother though…and honestly, some of the back story there made me wonder how the hell Katherine could have anything to do with her mother. Let alone be in the wedding for her.

“Can you imagine? Me, married to a millionaire!” her mother exclaimed.

“Yeah. And here I thought the best you could do was that mechanic. I think he was the only one you brought around who had a job.”

“He wasn’t so bad,” her mother said.

“He sexually abused me for two years!” Katherine cried.

“Yeah, well that’s what you say,” her mother said dismissively.

“Because it’s the truth! You always believe your boyfriends over me!” she exclaimed. “You have the worst taste in men. Makes me wonder what’s wrong with the rich guy you snagged. Is he a murderer? Or maybe he’s a mobster! That sounds about right.”

“You were always such a jealous child, and it seems like you’re jealous now, too. You just can’t stand to see me happy, can you?” Her mother’s eyes filled with large, wine-induced tears, and she stormed back into the tent. Katherine groaned. There was no way she would be able to handle a rehearsal dinner now, not with that woman. She heaved a heavy sigh and turned toward the collection of large buildings, wondering where on the island she could get a drink.”

It was something traumatic for a child and it was so easily dismissed.  It also didn’t didn’t make the story move along, so I think it could’ve been skipped, to keep the reader in the romantic mood.

There was one other thing, and it is totally a pet peeve of mine, so I’m not counting this towards my final rating. The cover model vs the description of Dirk in the story.  I’m one of those people who looks at the cover model to help get into the story if the character isn’t quite described in enough detail and as I said, this was a quick read, so not much time was focused on it, but the author focused on the important parts…like his erection, muscles, etc. YUM!  Which is fine, as long as you keep in mind many people do what I do.  Dirk in the story has “long. cascading hair.” As you can see, the cover model doesn’t.  So when I read about the hair being long, it stopped me in my tracks a bit and pulled me out of my fantasy. Luckily it only mentioned the long hair a couple times and I just kept the cover model in mind as I read the story, so it made it soooo delicious!!

My final thoughts: Despite how it may look from my comments, this book really was a wonderful read and I recommend it! Here is a tasty tidbit.

Dirk didn’t seem to give it a second thought. He looked at her tenderly, tightening his grip on her soft hands, and then they were kissing. His hot lips were eager to taste hers, and she accepted them hungrily, allowing her hand to roam up his strong forearm and settle onto his bulging bicep. Their tongues danced, sending waves of longing crashing throughout their bodies. He gripped her tightly, pulling her closer into his body, until she could feel the hardness of his lust pushing urgently against her.

And that’s not even the best part!!! Leela Ash has a knack for sex scenes and I envisioned every moment and was IN the moment.
